It’s that “spook-tacular” time of year again that involves costumes, pumpkin carving, black cats, bats, and, of course, candy. The leaves are turning orange and so have the supermarket shelves, lined with halloween-themed treats of every variety. But we all know that sugary candy is not a healthy treat for teeth, especially candy that is sticky or hard. If you’re hosting a Halloween soirée, expecting trick-or-treaters at your doorstep, or just trying to protect your own kiddos from spooky oral health issues, read on for six “fang-tastic” ideas for candy alternatives that are perfect Halloween treats.
Autumn is the season for fresh, delicious apples. But did you know that apples, full of fiber, are fabulous treats for your teeth? Crunching down on an apple will clean some of the plaque and food from your teeth while stimulating your gums. Candy can’t do that!
A pack of sugarless gum is a sweet alternative to a candy bar. It cleans your teeth and increases saliva flow while you chew it. Look for a brand with an American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance.
Help trick-or-treaters stay hydrated! Water is key to keeping your body healthy from your teeth to your toes. Water rinses out the mouth and encourages saliva production, which is key to preventing dry mouth and tooth decay.
Festive and fun, glow sticks will help keep the little ones safe as they traverse the neighborhood after dark.
From pumpkin pie to peanut butter cups, the season comes with a lot of sugary temptations. The ADA suggests replacing your toothbrush every three to four months so your guests will be happy to have a new one handy when the time comes.
If you do buy candy this Halloween, make it dark chocolate. Unlike milk chocolate, dark chocolate is light on sugar and contains valuable nutrients. Studies have even shown that dark chocolate may boast a few oral health benefits.
We know that you and your children aren’t likely to resist sugary treats in their entirety this season. But when you do indulge, do so in moderation. And as always, be sure to drink plenty of water, brush morning and night for two minutes each time, floss at least once daily, and schedule your family’s biannual dental appointments at Royal Lane Dental Center. Happy Halloween!
